HOBBITON

So Andy and I are very frugal people and this trip has been no exception. In fact, I considered naming this blog “How to Travel to New Zealand on a Budget.” However, we strongly believe that a trip to Hobbiton is not only splurge-worthy but that it merits its own post!

A couple of days ago, we stopped by Matamata with the sole purpose of visiting Hobbiton. It might've been the 2nd happiest day of my life (after our wedding day of course!). It was a fulfillment of a childhood dream. I told Andy that as the tour bus drove us closer and closer to the set, I felt the same nervous tension I felt on our wedding day (that “I can't believe this is happening! / I've been waiting forever for this” feeling). The tour was AWESOME and well worth the money.

There were about 20 people in our tour group. Our tour guide, Theresa, walked us around for a couple of hours, explaining behind-the-scenes tidbits on how the film and set were made, etc. We saw...

The village with the Green Dragon Pub:

A couple of cool signs:

MANY hobbit holes: (The set had been expanded for the upcoming movie.)

Peeking out the window
A cranky hobbit :)
The Party Tree:

Last but not least, Bag End:

And as if this tour wasn't enough, they ended it by allowing us to feed and pet sheep (including 2 small lambs) afterward!

What an amazing day!

That night, we watched Fellowship of the Ring in our campervan and had lamb stir fry for dinner :p

Can't wait for The Hobbit to come out in December!
